Someone close reached out to me via text message a few evenings ago inquiring about a church service that would be taking place with some Christian mediums. Perplexed by what I was reading, I immediately responded back that there is no such thing as a Christian “Medium”. So my next thought was “what in the world is this about?” Although they didn’t know too much about the service, I was able to share some things & scriptures, letting them know I strongly advised against attending that service. After doing a few online searches I realized there are people advertising themselves underneath that title which disturbed me greatly so let’s discuss this and look at the Scriptures for more understanding.

DEFINITIONS:
A Christian is defined as a follower of Jesus Christ. Someone who believes in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Savior, and who accepts of the teachings, contained in the Holy Bible. With that being said we have to take note of anyone calling themselves “Christian mediums” because based upon the scriptures, the two contradict each other.

A medium is generally defined as somebody believed to be sensitive to the supernatural. Someone who is believed to be able to perceive things that are usually beyond the range of human senses, or transmit messages between living people and the spirits of the dead. They may also use various charms, and objects to help them connect or communicate with the spirit world. You also see them referred to as psychics, fortune-tellers, soothsayers, clairvoyants, necromancers, palm or tarot card readers, shamans, or spiritists. While their sensitivity to the supernatural realm is very possible, the agents or methods in which they receive information is the problem. Right now you may see commercials on TV for a company called California Psychics and how “reliable” they are and how they helped people obtain various things through the information given. You may have heard of shows such as Long Island Medium, Crossing Over with John Edward, or Ghost Whisperer, people claiming to be able to communicate with the dead. Katy Perry performed her song “Dark Horse” at the 2014 Grammys and the theme of the performance was witchcraft, riddled with objects like a huge crystal ball (known to be used by clairvoyants), a haunted forest and pole dancing on broomsticks, mimicking being burnt at the stake like a Salem witch. Perry, as reported in interviews, said she wanted the song to have a "witchy, spell-y kind of black magic-y idea", so she wrote it from the perspective of a witch warning a man not to fall in love with her because if he does, she will be his last. I remember in the late 90s to early 2000s popular psychics like Sylvia Brown who was a regular guest on Montel Williams. And who can forget the Jamaican-accented, Ms. Cleo who captivated many people into her Psychic Readers Network hotline of friends until various lawsuits and charges of deceptive advertising and of fraud put her out of business.

The reason I’m sharing on this subject is because this area has been one God has continually shown me his burden over. These things are no longer, obscure practices, going on behind closed doors by those who are unsaved. These practices have crept their way out into the open, even being glorified by well-known people & various media methods. The most dangerous part: it has slid its way into the church being disguised as "Christianity" and it is not only influencing, but corrupting the body of Christ from lack of knowledge. Many Christians are not aware what God’s Word says about these practices so we can’t even take notice, expose, or warn others. Consulting psychics & promoting info obtained through these outlets are made to seem perfectly fine and harmless by the general public, when the bible is clear that there are physical and spiritual consequences to the practice and inquiring of these people.

[Unless written out, every scripture will be linked below to open in the same or new window so please open them as you read this post so that you can see it for yourself, or grab your bible and a highlighter/notebook and take notes.]

The Bible clearly condemns those who practice or seek out mediums or spiritism. [Leviticus 19:26, 31 and 20:27]. In the Old Testament, practicing & indulging in any form of witchcraft was considered punishable by death [Exodus 22:18]. Moses told the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 18:9-12 before going into the Promised Land, “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you.” These are not practices that any Christian should ever indulge or seek out. Our curiosity to seek out these things often comes from desires to know or control the future, but Satan is behind these things and he is just as much of a threat now, as he was back in Moses’s day no matter how harmless it may appear. The spirit world is a subject too complex to fully unravel in this post, but my main purpose is to help you understand that these particular practices invoke the aid of demons and evil spirit imposters who may use some bits truth to pull you into a web of deceit.  Several scriptures tell us that Witchcraft or divination (foretelling) is as the sin of rebellion and will separate us from God (1 Samuel 15:23, 2 Kings 9:22, 2 Chronicles 33:6, Nahum 3:4-6, Galatians 5:19-21). Those who perform these things are considered whores and harlots, charming people to turn from God, causing destruction and eternal damnation to be brought on themselves. Now this wasn’t just an issue in the Old Testament. In the New Testament book of Acts 16:16-19 we see a slave girl that was possessed by a spirit of divination. She brought her masters income though her fortune-telling, but Paul & Silas, 2 men of God recognized that the “gift” she possessed was not of god but of a familiar/evil spirit and Paul finally got tired of the spirit speaking through her and commanded him out of her, which made her masters mad and caused them to be thrown into prison. The interesting thing is that the spirit speaking through the slave girl was truthful in saying “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.” James 2:19 says “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” The spirit of divination’s motive in stating the facts was NOT to give glory to Jesus Christ. It would attempt to validate the girl’s practices to be ok, allowing him to continue on destroying her life & the lives of those around her, even if it was bringing her & her masters gain. See, the devil and his kingdom are crafty schemers. You can also read about Paul and Barnabus’s run in with a sorcerer/false prophet named Barjesus/Elymas in your own time in Acts 13:4-12.

Why does God’s law speak so strongly against witches, mediums, and so forth? It’s a crime against God himself. These people claim to reveal hidden secrets by contact with God and the invisible world. They are seducers, opening people up to demonic possession and affliction from Satan so they were commanded to be killed in the Old Testament. King Saul went to the witch of Endor in 1 Samuel 28:3 and 7-25 trying to conjure up the Prophet Samuel’s spirit [I’ll explain the difference between mediums and prophets shortly]. He was the one that set the decree for them to be killed, yet he was now in a different condition, mourning Samuel’s death and worried about the army of the Philistines that had gathered to fight against Israel. In desperation, Saul disguised himself, and went to her. The witch was afraid and said to him “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land. Why then are you laying a trap for my life to bring about my death?” The Prophet Samuel walked closely with the Lord and was able to guide Israel by the things God would reveal to him. Saul also had this prophetic gift at one point, but he was no longer hearing from God due to his continual disobedience and sin. Again, we see a demonic spirit, impersonating Samuel, telling Saul only part of the truth and in the end Saul’s sin to consult this medium and that false prediction led to his death  [1 Chronicles 10:13].

[[This leaves us with a very important lesson brothers & sisters in Christ: If you’re out here living in continual sin and disobedience, you grieve the Holy Spirit of God [Ephesians 4:30] and place yourself in a backslidden condition putting your soul back in danger (
Galatians 1:6;3:1;4:9-11;5:7).  Just as in Saul's case this can keep you from clearly hearing & being guided by Him. This is the Spirit of Truth Jesus told us in John 14:15-17 that the Father gave to those who are born-again and obey his commands. God continues to communicate with us today through the Holy Spirit. He speaks to us, convicts us of sin, reminds of the truth of God’s Word, reveals things that man would not otherwise know on his own, and although not the last or least, He gives us power over the demonic kingdom.]]

To wrap this study up, let me explain the difference between mediums and prophets of God. A Prophet(ess), or seer is a spokesman/woman for God. Like I stated earlier about the spirit world, prophets and prophecy is another complex subject that cannot be broken down in this type of teaching so I'll stick specifics pertaining to this subject. Prophets speak what they see or hear in God's name and by His authority; hence what the prophet predicts to come to pass is not of man but of God. Sometimes what is revealed to the prophet is from the past, will take place in the immediate future, or it may be for a later time, but a true prophet's words WILL ALWAYS come to pass. With that being said I must also make it known that the bible talks about false prophets too, so this is why it is important for every believer to be born-again [John 3:3-7]  so that we can test the spirit and discern whether God is speaking or someone else [1 John 4:1-6]. Prophets are the vessel God uses for the communication of His mind and His will to the people [Deuteronomy 18:18-19] and they also spoke out against mediums and false prophets.
The prophet Isaiah states in the book of Isaiah 8:19-20 “Someone may say to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead? Look to God’s instructions and teachings! People who contradict his word are completely in the dark.” Don’t let others talk you into seeking out mediums or anyone else of their kind. Our counsel and guidance should come from the Holy Spirit & the Word of God. He also states in Isaiah 44:24-26 "This is what the Lord says--your Redeemer and Creator: “I am the Lord, who made all things. I alone stretched out the heavens. Who was with me when I made the earth? I expose the false prophets as liars and make fools of fortune-tellers. I cause the wise to give bad advice, thus proving them to be fools. But I carry out the predictions of my prophets!...."

Prophecy, Prophets and the prophetic office are still in operation today (
1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 2:20 and 3:5), so it is very possible to attend prophetic or regular church services where words are shared to the glory of God because as explained in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 it is a gift to strengthen, encourage and comfort the body of Christ until He returns. Whatever the Holy Spirit shares through prophecy will be something to set people free from sin, delivering people from the bondage of any demonic influence or presence. It’s information or instructions that they would not privy to by their own means. It may even be a word of warning, judgment or correction, but whatever it is will be to show you that Jesus Christ is Lord, and is the only way to the God the Father, the source of all truth and giver of eternal life.

Romans 6:23 says "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." If you are guilty of consulting psychics or being one, I pray that you will seek some private time with the Lord today and confess your sins to God and repent for your involvement with these practices. 1 John 1:9 says "if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.". Over and over in the bible you will see ordinary people that God revealed himself in many different ways to so allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you and help you understand his desires to share things with those who serve Him. Deuteronomy 29:29 says "The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law." In your own time review these scriptures and the surrounding scriptures so that you get a full understanding of what was taking place, and share this information with others. For a more extensive study on the subject of mediums and witchcraft overall please refer to my YouTube channel where I have a NOT OF GOD series, coming from Deuteronomy 18:9-12. You will find 2 videos from this series linked below. I hope this information was helpful to you all. Feel free to leave me your comments or questions.

Until next time, may the Lord bless you – Nikki
