"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." - Galatians 5:16
"Walking in the bible not only refers to moving along on foot. It's a figure of speech that refers to our behavior, conduct, and course of life. It refers to how we observe the laws or customs. It ultimately refers to our lifestyle.
LASCIVIOUSNESS - Lustfulness, unchastity, and lewdness; promoting or partaking of that which tends to produce lewd emotions or foster sex sin & lust. [Mk 7:21-23, 2 Cor 12:21, 1 Pet 4:3, Jude 4]
IDOLATRY - Image worship, or the worship or extravagant adoration of anything other than God. [1 Cor 10:14, Col 3:5, 1 Pet 4:3, Eph 5:5]
FORNICATION - Adultery is unlawful sexual relationships between men & women, single or married, and fornication covers all other manner of unlawful sexual relations [Mt 15:19, Mt 5:32, Jn 8:4, Mk 7:21, Rom 1:24-27]
VARIANCE - Discord, quarrelling, debating, and disputes [Prv 6:14 & 6:19, 2 Cor 12:20, Isaiah 58:4, Rom 1:29]
EMULATIONS - Jealousy & envy; striving to excel at the expense of another. seeking to surpass and out do others; uncurbed rivalry spirit in religion, business, society, and other fields of endeavor [Pr 23:17, Job 5:2, Rom 10:2, Acts 13:45, Prv 6:34, Heb 10:27]
REVELINGS - Rioting, orgies, carousing (to drink deeply & frequently), boisterous feastings, with obscene music & other sinful activities and pleasures. [1 Pet 4:3, Rom 13:13}
Let me also note that following this list it says "and such like" meaning this is NOT the full list. We are warned that those of us who do such things will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God, unless we repent and go forward in walking by the "fruit" of the Spirit.
LOVE - Agape or divine love. A strong, tender, compassionate devotion to the well being of someone [1 Cor 13, 2 Jn 1:6] Ephesians 5:2 says that we should "walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour."
JOY - The emotional excitement, gladness, delight over blessings received or expected for self and others. 3 John 1:4 says "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth"
PEACE - The state of quietness, rest, harmony, order, and security in the midst of turmoil, strife, and temptations. [Isa 57:2, Malachi 2:6] God tells us in Isaiah 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things." People often see this scripture and make arguments that we have a cruel God but really what we need to see here is that there are 2 zones: Light and peace, and then darkness and evil. God has made the law of reaping and sowing. Evil and bad results will come when we sin. Sin was not created by God, man fell into sin. God knows evil only as he has seen it in rebels. He could not know sin experimentally but He did create the law and penalties for breaking His law.
PATIENCE - longsuffering, endurance, to bear long with frailties, offences, injuries, and the instigations of others, without murmuring, or resentment [1 Tim 1:16, Eph 4:1-2, Col 1:11]
KINDNESS - A tendency to be gentle, soft-spoken, kind, even tempered, and refined in character or conduct. [2 Tim 2:24-26, Tit 3:1-2, Jas 3:17]
GOODNESS - The state of being good, kind, virtuous, benevolent, generous, and God-like in life & conduct [Ex 33:19, Ps 31:19, Rom 2:4, Lk 6:27-32] If we walk right Psalm 23:6 tells us that " Surely [God's] goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever."
FAITHFULNESS - The living, divinely implanted, acquired, and created principle of inward & wholehearted confidence, assurance, trust and reliance in God and all that he says. [Josh 24:14, 1 Sam 26:23, Ps 5:9, Ps 40:40, Mt 23:23, 3 John 1:3, Rev 13:10]
MEEKNESS - Humility, the tendency to gentle, kind, even-balanced in tempers and passions, and patient in suffering injuries without the desire to get revenge. [Mt 5:5, Num 12:3, Ps 25:9, 1 Cor 4:21, Gal 6:1, Col 3:12, 2 Tim 2:25, Jas 3:13, 1 Pet 3:15]
SELF-CONTROL - Temperance, a moderation in the indulgence of the appetites and passions [Acts 24:25, 2 Pet 1:16, Tit 1:8, Tit 2:2]
As we said earlier, our walk refers to how we observe the laws or customs, so we understand that the laws of God do not penalize us from conducting ourselves by these fruits.
PRAYER: Lord, help me be more mindful of my walk. Psalm 1:1 says "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked." I don't want ANYTHING to keep me from fellowship with you or missing the Kingdom of God and eternal life. Those works don't help me, they hinder me and block your blessings. Please forgive me for my sins and help me live by Spirit everyday, all day - In Jesus' name -- AMEN
I hope you enjoyed today's study! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them in the comment box below or you can send me a private message by going to the top of this page and selecting "More". 2 Timothy 2:15 says that we should study the Word "to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." I want to leave you with some additional scriptures to study in your own time:
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 - we may have a flesh body but our spirit has divine power to destroy those works of the flesh and much more!
Genesis 5:24 & 6:9 - Enoch & Noah "walked" with God, showing how we should all have personal fellowship with Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:15 - Be careful to "walk" with wisdom
Colossians 1:10 - "Walk" in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing him & bearing "fruit"
1 John 1:16 - If we say we have fellowship with Him, while "walking" in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth
Romans 8:4 - "Walking" by the Spirit in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us.
Philippians 3:17-18 - We should encourage others to imitate our "walk", as well as keep an eye on one another, because some "walk" as enemies of the cross of Christ. This is not to be accusers when someone falls into sin, but to know when darkness is trying to pose as light. If you only have 1 lamp in a corner of a room you'll notice many shadows will be cast. but say you have lamps on in all 4 corners of the room, there won't be as many shadows because its hard for darkness to dwell among so much light. We need many more people to "walk in the light of truth"
Ephesians 5:7-14 - I decided to link this scripture because it just confirms what I stated with the last scripture. Since we do not "walk" in darkness anymore we should not have anything to do with the FRUITLESS deeds of darkness.
Revelation 21:23-27 - Keeping the last 2 scriptures in mind, The kingdom of God in eternity won't need the sun or moon. We will "walk" in the glory of God's light & there will be NO night/darkness. Nothing fleshly will be able to enter the city of God -- AMEN!!
